April Ross
April Ross was one of the few female beach volleyball stars who won medals at several Olympics. Alix-Klineman will compete with Ross at Tokyo for her third gold in the next couple of days. Ross's aim is to get her first Olympic gold medal. Since she's 39 years old, it may be her last shot. However, she is certain of taking top honors. Ross was mentioned in NBC Boston as saying that when you perform at your very highest, and even perform well, you will win the gold. "I'm also going to try to have a bit of luck." Ross was born in California in Costa Mesa in 1982. She lived here along with her parents and sibling. Ross's athletic endeavors began at Newport Harbor High School where she played in a variety of activities. Her pre-athletic career comprised indoor volleyball along with basketball, running and track. In her final game, she clearly stood out. Based on her bio, she was a middle blocker and an outside hitting volleyball player during her high-school career. She was named by the Gatorade National Circle of Champions Player of the Year in 1999 due to her accomplishments. Her volleyball skills also brought her an Orange County Athlete of the Years trophy in 2000. While Ross and Klineman are in the spotlight from 2017 onward, the former was already an established athlete on the beach even before the pair formed. The American has been a major winner in tournaments twice with different partners. The other has become an icon of the volleyball world. Jennifer Kessy coached her from 2007 until 2013. Kessy's teammate Ross, who won the world title with Kessy in 2009, also was an important player on the an international level. They eventually won an Olympic silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Misty Maytreanor (Jennings) as well as Misty Maytreanor won gold, beating them to it. It was fate that had them. Ross was Walsh Jennings' new partner when May-Treanor retired. The duo were able to win the bronze medal in beach volleyball in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Ross was a college player with the Trojans of USC prior to starting her professional career. She was a player in high school, and even some years before she hit the beaches as a professional. The Trojans had a great run for Ross at the college level. She was a All-American as well as Pac-10 freshman of the year in 2000 as a young freshman. In addition, she helped her Trojans to reach the Final Four. Her personal life was tense after a devastating loss in her sophomore, however, she was capable of achieving the All-American award. The last two years with the Trojans in the program, she led them to success by winning two successive national titles. She was a great volleyball player and won the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the best female volleyball player in the NCAA. Ross, a USC international relations student was a volleyball star. Sadly, Ross mom Margie did not get to see Ross rise to the highest levels of beach volleyball superstardom. Ross's mother died of breast cancer while she was a sophomore at USC.
